Was It Casual has no accounts and never asks who you are. Browsing the situation library and taking the quizzes happen entirely on your device. When you ask Tess — our AI — for a decode (you describe your situation in your own words) or a check (you paste a message before sending it), that text is sent to our server and on to Anthropic's Claude API to write the response. It is not stored, by us, at any point.
Tess is the name we give the app's AI voice. Every read she writes is generated by Anthropic's Claude, working from our own authored material. She is not a person, and nobody at Was It Casual reads what you send her.
For a decode, three things leave your device: the text you wrote, which of our situations it most closely matched, and an anonymous subscriber identifier. For a check, the same, except the text is your draft message plus anything you chose to add about what has been happening. Our server checks the identifier against your subscription, forwards your text and the matched situation to Anthropic, and returns the result to you.
Our server writes no database and keeps no file. Its log line for a request records the matched situation name, the verdict for a check, and the number of tokens used — never your text and never your identifier. Your words exist in our memory for the seconds the request takes, and then they are gone.
Your quiz answers: quizzes are scored in your browser and nothing you tap is sent anywhere. And the instant flags on the check page — the “no worries if not” kind — which run on your device as you type, before anything is sent.
Anthropic processes your text in order to generate the decode. Under their commercial terms, API inputs are not used to train their models, and they retain inputs and outputs for a limited period for safety and abuse monitoring. See Anthropic's privacy policy. This is the one place your words go that is not us — if you would rather not send something, don't; the situation library works without it.
You do not need to name anyone for a decode to work. Describing what happened is enough, and it gives a better read than a transcript does. Please don't paste anything you would not want processed by a third party.
Which situations you have opened, which you have saved, and your decode history. This is stored locally by the app, is never uploaded, and is deleted when you delete the app.
Subscriptions bought in the app are handled by Apple or Google; subscriptions bought on this website are handled by RevenueCat's web billing, which takes your payment details and email address to charge you and send receipts. In both cases RevenueCat manages subscription status on our behalf, keyed to an anonymous identifier — never your messages, and never which situations you read. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
We hold that same anonymous identifier in memory for up to an hour, with nothing but timestamps, purely to enforce the hourly limit on decodes and checks.
Static pages. No cookies, no accounts, and nothing that follows you anywhere.
We do count page views, using Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookie, stores nothing on your device, builds no profile, and cannot identify you or follow you to any other site — it tells us a page was read and roughly where the visit came from, and nothing else. We use it to work out which of these reads people actually want more of.
Questions or a deletion request: [email protected]. We hold no account, no email address and no stored copy of anything you have written, so there is nothing on our side to delete — deleting the app removes the local copy. For Anthropic’s retention, use the link above.
